Naughty Girls Need Love, Too
My heart was pounding in my chest, and it felt like muscle after muscle in my body was going numb. The band kept playing and I tried again, but all that came from my mouth was air.
On February 8, 1988, when I was nominated alongside Kate Bush, Alison Moyet, Sinitta, and Kim Wilde in the category of British Female Solo Artist at the Brit Awards, I had come further in my music career than I ever could have dreamed. Even if I didn’t win the prize that evening, it was an enormous recognition, topped off by the fact that my new album was heading up the charts all around the world.
Maybe that was why things hit me so hard that spring.
The first thing that happened was Kit Miller and Peter Foster, my ex-boyfriends, selling the details of my love life to the press—Kit to the Sun and Peter to Playboy.
The two men had met through me, and had since started working together on Peter’s health products.
In Peter’s interview, he claimed, among other things, that I had forced him to have sex up to five times a day; Kit said that during our relationship, I’d had sex with another page three girl. None of it was true, but constantly being linked to the two of them started to get incredibly irritating, not least because some people assumed I knew all about their scams, or that I was even participating in them. At that particular moment, they were busy launching a new product called Slim-liner, and the interview Kit gave to the Sun must have been part of the launch, because he wasn’t paid for it. Instead, he was given free publicity for his and Peter’s products in exchange for making up stories about me.
The next blow came during a break from a PR tour in the US, when I flew to Italy to do a couple of gigs there. I’ll never forget it. Right in the middle of a show, my voice started to disappear, and I suddenly found myself unable to sing a single note. I saw a couple of people at the front look up at me in confusion and felt an almost surreal sense of unease spread through my body.
I’d noticed the problem before. It was like I constantly had a cold, and I had realized that my voice was getting deeper and deeper.
I looked out at the crowd, who were roaring my name in unison. My heart was pounding in my chest, and it felt like muscle after muscle in my body was going numb. The band kept playing and I tried again, but all that came from my mouth was air. Shortly afterwards, I ran from the stage.
Mum met me in the backstage area, and when she realized what was happening, she immediately booked two seats on the last flight to London. We slept over at her house that night, and she called our GP the very next morning, who recommended a Harley Street throat specialist.
